March 9, 2008
We met on a brisk morning at the White Oak Station
located at the Junction
of Highway 7 South and Highway 206. Everyone was bundled up for the day's ride.
Climbing on our bikes, we headed south on Highway 7
through the Ozark Mountains. Our route takes us through
the small town of Jasper, nestled beside the Little Buffalo River.
(Note: Some of the pictures along Highway 7 and Highway 374 were taken the day
after our ride. Much of the snow covering the mountainside had melted overnight.)

We turn onto Highway 374 on our way to Highway 123 and
Mt. Judea.
At Mt. Judea we turned right and headed up the mountain where the
air got colder and the snow deepened. There's snow everywhere except
for "thankfully" the highway. We ride through the switchbacks where we
discovered the corners were covered with lots and lots of gravel. Riding
was a bit spooky but everyone made it ok. On a good day the switchbacks
can be a challange, always be careful and watch for gravel.
We connected with Highway 7 again heading north this
time. Instead
of riding back through Jasper, we turned onto Highway 16 East. Two
miles after turning onto Highway 16 we stopped at Clayborn's Grocery
in Deer for a rest and to warm up a bit. Clayborn's is a owned by a
very nice couple, Jack and Cheryl Clayborn. The Clayborn's found their
store buried in the snow a few days before we arrived, as you can see
there's still a little of the white stuff left on the ground.
Coming down Highway 21 to Boxley we head towards Ponca
on Highway 43
and enjoyed the elk that frequent the fields along the Buffalo River.
Our last stop of the day was at the lookout on Gaither
Mountain. Our
ride took us 200 miles through snow, gravel and was a bit chilly at
times but it was a beautiful day and a great ride.
A very nice day!! : )
